On a summer afternoon, at the Fox Point Municipal Pool, laughter echoed through the air as parents unwound and children joyfully splashed and played. For 55 years, it was more than just a pool, it was the heart of the community. The much-beloved Fox Point Pool closed in 2023 because it was beyond repair. By April 2025, the pool, park and bathhouse were all demolished.
The Fox Point Pool first opened its turnstiles in July 1968. The pool was born from a collective desire to create a safe and convenient summertime oasis for all ages. Although the spirit of the pool remained vibrant over time, the physical structure did not. Repairs on the aging pool became costly and amenities disappeared, until a host of mechanical issues forced the closure of the Fox Point Municipal Pool 2023.
In 2019, a village-wide survey, found that 84% of residents supported keeping a municipal pool, with 935 households responding.
At a packed Village Board meeting in 2023, residents fondly recalled childhood memories, swimming lessons, first jobs, neighborhood gatherings and numerous other events at the pool. The large outcry led to several news stories and the formation of the Friends of the Fox Point Pool (FFPP) – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to raising 50% of the cost of a new facility.
In March 2024, the Village Board unanimously approved keeping the pool at its original location on Santa Monica Boulevard and endorsed schematic designs for a new facility. Plans include a modern, ADA-accessible pool, playground, outdoor area to host food trucks and pop-up events, as well as a spacious year-round community room; which could potentially host everything from local Scout meetings and Book Clubs to Art Fairs, Beer Gardens, Game Nights, senior activities and wellness workshops.
Since May 2024, more than 130 families have pledged or donated, and a generous grant from the Tate Family Foundation has pushed total contributions to more than $130,000. The FFPP is actively seeking contributions large and small from individuals, businesses, and foundations. If each household were to donate $1,500 dollars we would quickly reach our goal!
As Fox Point nears its 100th anniversary in 2026, we face a defining choice: let this beloved community jewel fade into memory, or rally to bring it back.
